Not the Only Option: Plastic Microwave Cookware

24.06.2009 14:38
Plastic microwave cookware seemed to be the only option on the market a few years ago. Today, there are ceramic cookware options, glass cookware options and others that give consumers some versatility in their cooking and baking. Although plastic microwave cookware seems to be the most specifically designed for cooking in the microwave, the other options mentioned give the versatility of being able to be used in the microwave as well as the conventional oven. Plastic microwave cookware is usually the least expensive on the market today, often costing only ten to twenty dollars for a complete set that can be used for cooking, serving and storing the foods. This makes the plastic microwave cookware very versatile and inexpensive to use, ready for almost any occasion.Testing ProductsThere are certain things to consider when using plastic microwave cookware. One is that if the cookware is truly microwave safe, the container should not get hot in the microwave, the food should be the only thing that is heated. The reason for this is that the microwaves pass through the microwave safe container and into the food itself, thus leaving the dish cool to the touch. The best plastic microwave cookware containers are those that are shallower in most cases. The shallower the container, the more the microwaves are allowed to get to the food more than being resisted by the container that the food is in. In addition, the container is best if it is rounded rather than rectangular. If the plastic microwave cookware is a good grade, then the plastic will not become distorted when cooking foods over a long period of time. The lesser grade plastics will become distorted, seeming to melt and collapse in the microwave rather than retaining their shape.Another benefit of using a plastic microwave cookware set is that the containers are useful in more ways than just for cooking. The plastic containers can often be used in extremely cold temperatures such as in the freezer for storing food. This is amazing since they are also able to contain foods that are being heated to such extremes as three hundred fifty to four hundred fifty degrees. Individuals should check the containers to see if there are any warnings as to the degree of heat that can be withstood by the plastic microwave cookware so that they do not use it in circumstances beyond what it is designed to bear.
